Recognizing Outstanding Achievements

Launched in 2001 by the Forum and Euronatur, under the auspices of the now former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Prof. Dr. Klaus Töpfer, the ECA reviews applications from a wide range of media work and issues bi-annual awards.

The ECA recognizes efforts in the area of media that present in an innovative, factually accurate and impeccable manner, the enlightened structural changes that are needed to achieve sustainability.  Prize-worthy initiatives will enhance public knowledge and awareness about the interdependence of economic, social and ecologic issues.

What the jury is looking for are possibly interactive communication structures, which allow more people more access to more information, thus creating the conditions for more active political and social involvement of all citizens.

All those who work in the media have the right to submit and to suggest entries.  This includes journalists in print and broadcast media, as well as press offices of ministries, public institutions and agencies, the publicity departments of private companies, unions and federations and commercial PR agencies.  Artists are also eligible to participate.

The first ECA took place on November 17th, 2003 in Magdeburg, Germany at the time of the 3rd Daimler-Chrysler Environmental Forum.  From a field of about 50 applications, the selection committee had to select winners in three award categories:  Private Companies, Initiatives and Organizations, and Individuals.

The second ECA was presented at a dinner ceremony during the Bellagio Forum Members Meeting in Stuttgart, Germany on October 5th, 2005.
