The DBU (German Federal Foundation for Environment) was established under German Civil Law in 1990, with assets of around DM 2.5 billion from the proceeds of privatising the steel group Salzgitter AG.

It is one of the largest foundations in Europe and focuses on projects which help to protect the environment through integrated products and production methods - and on environmental education programmes seeking to change patterns of behaviour.
