FBSD was founded in 1996 by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) to promote business understanding of sustainable development and to encourage education and competence building, research and demonstrative projects in the field of sustainable development. It operates the Virtual University.

Originally named Foundation for Business and Sustainable Development, it changed to its current title in January 2002.
