Millennium Development Goals Initiative: Funded by two members of the BFSD Awareness Working Group, a work-plan development has been initiated to gain an overview of activities in Europe and beyond, targeted at achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This action is a direct response to a request from United Nations Development Programme Administrator Mark Malloch Brown made to the BFSD plenary in New York in December 2003. Mr. Brown challenged the Forum to play a role in reaching the 2015 targets. BFSD members, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and Television for the Environment (TVE), are engaged in or planning significant activities related to the MDGs. IUCN's Countdown 2010 Initiative to halt the loss of biodiversity in Europe, and TVE's initiative in Europe to raise awareness of the MDGs via television were felt to be particularly relevant to answering the challenge. Building on these two initiatives, the Aachener Foundation and the Lighthouse Foundation have made it possible for the BFSD to move forward in defining and planning a response to Mr. Brown's challenge. Paul Brannen and Florence Curtis, have been employed, to assist in establishing an overview of current activities focused on the MDGs. They will be contacting a wide range of networks including foundations, NGOs, multi-lateral organizations, faith groups, corporations, and individuals during November and December 2004. Recommendations for further action will follow. If you wish to learn more or provide input please contact the Executive Director of BFSD, Sam Shiroff at info@bfsd.org. |
