The Bellagio Forum for Sustainable Development was legally incorporated in 1996 as a non-profit Association of Organizations under German law. It is governed by a Board of Directors.  A Secretariat, located on the premises of the German Environmental Foundation oversees the day-to-day operations of the Forum.

The Bellagio Forum members formally meet twice a year. Board meetings and telephone conferences are scheduled as required.  The coordination function of the Secretariat and electronic networking assure easy communication and quick access to the members of the Forum and external partner organizations.

Membership of the Forum requires the willingness and ability to contribute financially to sustainable development related programs. Those interested in membership are invited to present the work of their organization to a membership meeting.  The final decision on membership lies with the Board of Directors.
