The executive director of the Bellagio Forum, Samuel Shiroff, announced that he would be leaving the Forum at the end of 2006. In a mid-October e-mail to BFSD members, Shiroff explained that he had accepted a position at Bosch and Siemens Home Appliances to work on the dissemination of a bottom-of-the-pyramid technology. Shiroff, who will be based in Munich, will be the business development director for Protos, the plant-oil cooking stove, a technology developed with the support of the Bellagio Forum. After three and half years at the helm of the Forum, Shiroff’s departure was greeted with both congratulations and appreciation for the progress that had been made during Sam’s tenure.“Sam took over the Forum in 2003," explained BFSD chairman Michael Hoelz, “since then we have a completely new structure and communication platform; the vast majority of our members are engaged and we have some very solid projects, highlighted by PRIME – which really makes the Forum stand-out as a significant contributor to sustainable progress.” Shiroff elaborated on the basis of his decision, “This was not an easy choice for me to make. Being the director of the Forum was a difficult, but rewarding task. It was a place where I could wake up every morning and feel that I was making a positive contribution. Additionally, the Forum has really just turned a corner and I think has the true opportunity to fulfill its potential if my successor and the members focus on the Forum’s strengths – which I think should concentrate more and more on the issues elaborated in PRIME. “On the one hand, I have the strong inclination to continue to work with the Forum. On the other hand, I also have a passion and desire to get on the ground, focus on a single, large-scale effort and see how it can directly impact people’s lives around the world. The chance to work for BSH and focus on the plant-oil cooker was one I simply couldn’t pass up. I am incredibly enthusiastic about this organization, about the location, about the technology and the overall task. Simply put, it was an offer I couldn’t refuse. That much said, it is obvious I am going to continue to focus my efforts on sustainable development and am fully committed to doing whatever I can to make sure the future of the Bellagio Forum is bright.” |
