Humankind currently faces one of its biggest challenges ever. With the global economy increasingly dependent on a finite base of natural resources and with non-renewable natural capital already significantly depleted, the design and development of sustainability have ceased to be intellectual luxuries.
The environmental movement and other forward-thinkers have long advocated the need for ecological sustainability and have had some success in communicating their concerns to the world at large. But new and possibly interactive communication structures are urgently needed so that environmental survival can be discussed immediately, widely, openly and globally.  Conventional news standards, which generally emphasize the negative such as accidents and disasters, need to be critically questioned. We need to find radical structural changes, both in energy supplies and land use as well as in the ways we can give people more access to information about our global condition, thus stimulating more active involvement of all citizens in the creation and implementation of sustainable living concepts.
